چکیده

In addition to the ever growing host population, multiple other factors have contributed to the rapid growth of the global Internet routing table, such as policy routing, multihoming, and traffic steering. In this paper we first sort the routing table entries into two broad classes, covering prefixes which represent IP address blocks that do not overlap, either partially or completely, with the address block represented by any other entry in the routing table, and covered prefixes, commonly referred to as ”holes”, which represent sub-blocks of those address blocks that are already represented by some shorter prefixes in the routing table. We then develop a classification methodology by identifying the different ways each covered prefix is announced to the global routing system. We inferred the causes of each covered prefix class and identified possible motives for the fragmentation of covering prefixes. Based on our analysis, we provide an empirical model of the global routing table growth by taking into account all the major factors that have been identified in this study.

IPv4 Address Allocation and the Evolution of the BGP routing table

IP addresses are allocated to Internet service providers (ISPs) by four Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), in turn the ISPs further assign addresses to end users. To understand the relationship, if any exists, between the address allocation and the global routing table growth, we present a quantitative analysis of the IPv4 address allocation and growth of the global BGP routing table over the...

BGP Routing Table: Trends and Challenges

BGP is currently the most important protocol for ensuring global connectivity over the Internet. This puts a great deal of responsibility on BGP and creates a number of challenges for it. Of primary concern is the impact that various currently deployed BGP-based techniques have on the scalability of the global routing table. While these techniques provide ISPs with additional traffic management...

Analysis of BGP Update Surge during Slammer Worm Attack

Although the Internet routing infrastructure was not a direct target of the January 2003 Slammer worm attack, the worm attack coincided in time with a large, globally observed increase in the number of BGP routing update messages. Our analysis shows that the current global routing protocol BGP allows local connectivity dynamics to propagate globally. As a result, any small number of edge networ...

MRT dump file manipulation toolkit (MDFMT) - version 0.1

The MRT routing information export format represents an effective way of storing BGP routing information in binary dump files. Although a few tools exist to extract data from MRT dump files, most of them do not allow repacking or creating such MRT files. The MRT dump file manipulation toolkit (MDFMT) allows to repack parts of large MRT dump files containing BGP update messages into smaller ones...

Impact of IPv4 Address Allocation Practice on BGP Routing Table Growth

Rapid BGP routing table growth has been a main concern for the operation of the Internet in recent years. In this paper, we study how current IPv4 address allocation practice affects the BGP table growth. The practice includes both the newlymade allocations and two address policies, i.e., allocation size and minimum allocation size. We first found that the address blocks allocated during the pa...
